This summer we celebrated three couples during our fifth annual Pride Grows in Brooklyn event, which is our annual wedding and event services giveaway for queer folx planned and executed by a diverse group of progressive, socially conscious, and impact driven wedding pros.

Among the lucky winners this year were Megan and Nicole, two green thumbs who fell for each other in NYC and grew roots towards each other. Together, we crafted a wedding ceremony that celebrated their 9-year journey. They chose to include two passages read by good friends - the first called ‘HOME’ by Nikki Banas and the second, an untitled reading written by a newlywed I married years ago.

Excerpt of their Welcome

“Tis’ the season of PRIDE! And there’s no better time of year to celebrate the revolutionary power of queer love than right here and right now on this Brooklyn rooftop garden overlooking the city where your love blossomed into the devoted commitment you’ve shared over these past nearly 9 years. You’re coming full circle from your first date at a Manhattan rooftop and first home at your little Bronx rooftop where you first started intertwining your lives together.”

Untitled Reading by Lisa Tran

“Someone once told me to always live for the little things in life. Live for the 5am sunrises and the 5pm sunsets. Where you’ll always see colors in the sky that don’t usually belong. Live for road trips and bike rides with music in your ears and wind in your hair. Live for days when you are surrounded by your favorite people who make you realize that the world is not a cold, harsh place. Live for the little things because they will make you realize that this is what life is about, this is what it means to be alive.”

Megan and Nicole also wanted to hear the resounding support of their family and chosen family so they included Community Vows, asking their loved ones to support them in their marriage. Before pronouncing them married, they chose to include a ‘Tasting the Elements’ ritual that represents the different phases of marriage - sour, bitter, spicy, and sweet.

Excerpt of their Love Story

“As Nicole put it, “those first two years felt like a dream!” A better-than-imagined reality where they grew roots towards each other and drafted the blueprint of their lives together. When Megan moved in with Nicole, she transformed their condo into a home - bringing art and personality to their shared space. Together, they planted their first herb seedlings, rescued Panko during Pride weekend in 2019, built their own raised tomato bed for their little Bronx rooftop garden, and co-created a fulfilling life together.

All this time, you built the foundation of your partnership and have expanded into your 100-year old fixer upper with a yard where Panko can run wild, and where your garden and family will grow. Even when there are giant storms that flood your home with 3 inches of water, you find solace in knowing that you’re able to solve any issue as a team.”

Excerpt of Taste the Elements ritual

“Jonathan, please bring forth the spicy element. Your homegrown hot sauce you’ll each partake represents the passion you’ll continue to bring into your marriage. It embodies the utter zest you have for your many projects you set your minds to, the creativity you inspire in each other, and admiration you have for one another. Remember that Tinder was the first spark in your story of the countless since so feel the warmth of the heat you’ve concocted in this homegrown bottle every time you create and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Last but not least, Albert, please bring forth the sweet element. This maple syrup you’ll savor embodies those harmonious, joyful, tender moments in your marriage that you’ll treasure. It embodies all the blessings you’ll manifest, all the flowers, fruits, and veggies you’ll sow. Like the maple trees who grow tall and strong towards the sun, remember to bask in the light of those sweet moments. You deserve them all!”

We are so grateful to Megan and Nicole for being the beacons of light they are and for shining brightly at this years Pride Grows in Brooklyn event. Whether you believe in fate or not, there’s no denying that in their case - their intimate rooftop wedding felt destined.

Congratulations, Megan and Nicole!
