With Biden dropping out of the presidential race and Kamala stepping in as the Democratic nominee, we’ve been shaking with excitement to vote in our first Black and South Asian Woman President! With over 30 years of experience and a platform that supports human rights, bodily autonomy, families, veterans, and the preservation of our democracy, we know that she’s THE ONE our country needs to lead us towards a more united future.

We have a few things in common with Vice President Harris. We’re children of hard-working immigrant parents who raised us with strong community-centered values and a deep-seated love of family. Plus, we’re wedding officiants! So when we remembered that she officiated her step-son’s wedding, we found one more thing in common with our future Madam President.

If you’d like to quote Kamala Harris’ words of wisdom that she shared with her step-son, Cole Emhoff and his now-wife, Greenley Littlejohn, at their wedding in your own wedding ceremony, here it is:

“Pay attention to your marriage. Pay attention to it and be purposeful and intentional about nurturing it. At the end of everyday, find some way to check in, no matter how tired you are or how many miles apart you may be, even if it’s just at the end of the day, and say ‘I love you.’”

Another incredible quote from Vice President Kamala Harris’ interview with People magazine that you can include in your wedding ceremony:

“For us, we think of marriage as being not just between these two people, but the coming together of families. So it was very much with that spirit that we all participated. I want for those two (Cole and Greenley) to have a loving marriage where they are best friends and they know that it’s not just them against the world, that our family supports them. That the community of people that came together at the wedding supports (them).”

As modern, progressive wedding officiants, we personalize wedding ceremonies through an equitable, intersectional feminist lens to share your story with an abundance of loving energy. There’s no mention of obeying or possessive language here. Eww!
